Diversity Education
Goals,
Needs, and Outcome
At a young age, people often recognize the correlation between power and
privilege, and the variables of race, ethnicity, language, gender, and
physical ability differences. As such, it is imperative to educate persons
about the differences that exist between different populations in a given
society, as well as, equip persons from all socio-economic backgrounds and
genders with the skills to appreciate diversity through the employment of
empathy, respect, and equality. APJN acknowledges the unique vantage point
which institutions of learning have in our society to address many of these
underlying issues. With that being said, APJN is committed to providing
diversity education to interested school officials and students. Outlined
below is an overview of the respective training sessions.
Training
topics for school officials
• Nurturing diversity, tolerance, and multiculturalism in the
classroom;
• Dealing with prejudices, racial, and cultural conflicts in the
classroom; and
• Incorporating multiculturalism education materials in school
curricula.
Training
topics for students
• Learning respect and appreciation of differences;
• Understanding pervasive and prejudicial behavior, and its role in
perpetuating stereotypes;
• Discerning the environment for discrimination;
• Gaining the confidence to act proactively and react effectively to
discriminatory situations; and
• Adopting the arts as a vehicle for self-expression.
